Dermal fillers are injectable treatments used to restore or enhance facial structure, volume and proportion. Most modern fillers are based on hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring component of the extracellular matrix that contributes to tissue hydration and support.

Facial ageing occurs across several anatomical layers at the same time — including bone, deep and superficial fat compartments, retaining ligaments and skin. As these structures change, the face can lose projection, support and contour, which may contribute to hollowing, deeper folds, jowling or reduced definition. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be selected and placed within different tissue planes to address these changes in a targeted way.

The purpose of treatment is therefore not simply to “fill a line,” but to identify where structural support has been lost or where facial proportions can be improved, then restore that support while preserving natural movement and expression.

How does it work?

Restore structural support
Depending on the area being treated, filler may be placed deeply near bone, within fat compartments or more superficially within the soft tissue. The injection plane is chosen according to the anatomical structure that requires support.

Replace or enhance volume
Hyaluronic acid gel physically occupies space within the tissue, allowing lost volume to be replenished or naturally under-projected areas to be enhanced. This can improve cheek projection, chin balance, jawline definition, lip shape or areas of facial hollowing.

Improve transitions between facial areas
Strategic filler placement can soften abrupt shadows or depressions between anatomical regions, such as the cheek and nasolabial area, while maintaining the natural contours of the face.

Different fillers behave differently
Hyaluronic acid fillers are not all the same. Their firmness, elasticity, cohesivity and ability to integrate with tissue vary, so product selection depends on whether the aim is projection, structural support, movement or softer tissue integration.

Immediate correction with tissue integration
The change in contour is visible immediately, although swelling can temporarily affect the appearance. Over the following days, the filler settles and integrates with the surrounding tissue.

What can dermal fillers treat? Dermal fillers can restore lost volume, enhance facial contours and improve areas such as the lips, cheeks, chin, jawline, nasolabial folds and marionette lines while maintaining natural-looking results.

How long do dermal fillers last? Depending on the treatment area and product used, dermal fillers typically last between 6 and 18 months.

Will my dermal fillers look natural? When carefully planned and performed, dermal fillers are designed to enhance your natural features while maintaining facial balance and avoiding an overfilled appearance.

Is there any downtime after dermal filler treatment? Most patients experience mild swelling, redness or bruising, which usually settles within a few days. You can normally return to most daily activities immediately.

Do dermal filler injections hurt? Most patients find the treatment well tolerated. A fine needle or cannula is used, and many dermal fillers contain a local anaesthetic to improve comfort.

Which dermal filler treatment is right for me? The most suitable treatment depends on your facial anatomy, concerns and desired outcome. A consultation allows your practitioner to recommend a personalised treatment plan based on your individual goals.
